Ornamental Aluminum Patio Fence on Curved Retaining Wall in Ellijay, GA

North Georgia mountain properties often require fencing solutions that work with existing landscaping, retaining walls, patios, and other architectural features. This recent project in Ellijay, Georgia, is a great example.

The homeowners wanted to enclose a patio area located along the top of a curved concrete retaining wall. We installed a 4-foot-tall ornamental aluminum fence that follows the curve of the wall while providing an attractive, durable barrier around the patio.

The project also included two sections of traditional cedar split-rail fencing elsewhere on the property, allowing us to combine two very different fence styles in ways that complemented their surroundings.

The Customer's Project

The primary portion of the project involved installing ornamental aluminum fencing around an elevated patio.

Because the patio follows the top of a curved retaining wall, this wasn't a typical fence installation where posts could simply be set into soil. The new fence needed to follow the existing wall while remaining properly aligned, securely anchored, and visually consistent around the patio.

The homeowners also wanted cedar split-rail fencing installed on both sides of the house.

One approximately 30-foot section was installed on one side of the home, while a second approximately 10-foot section was installed on the other side and connected to an existing arched wooden arbor.

Installing Aluminum Fence on a Concrete Retaining Wall

The retaining wall presented the most interesting part of this Ellijay fence installation.

Instead of setting the aluminum fence posts in the ground, we core-bored holes directly into the concrete retaining wall. Each post location had to be carefully positioned so the completed fence would follow the wall's curve while maintaining proper spacing and alignment.

Once the holes were core-bored, the aluminum fence posts could be securely anchored into the concrete.

This installation method allowed us to place the fence directly along the retaining wall rather than unnecessarily reducing the usable patio area by moving the fence inward.

Core-boring the concrete retaining wall allowed the ornamental aluminum fence posts to be securely anchored while following the curved perimeter of the patio.

Following the Curve of the Patio

Straight fence lines are relatively simple. Curved retaining walls require considerably more attention to layout.

The 4-foot ornamental aluminum fence was installed to follow the existing curve of the patio and retaining wall. The finished installation provides a clean transition around the patio without overpowering the landscaping or views surrounding the property.

Ornamental aluminum was particularly well suited to this application because of its clean appearance, durability, and relatively low maintenance requirements.

Adding Cedar Split-Rail Fence

The project wasn't limited to aluminum fencing.

We also installed two short sections of 3-hole cedar split-rail fence.

One section extended approximately 30 feet along one side of the house. A second section, approximately 10 feet long, was installed on the opposite side and connected to an existing arched wooden arbor.

The rustic character of cedar split rail was a natural fit for these areas of the property, while ornamental aluminum provided the more refined appearance needed around the patio.

Using different fence materials in different areas allowed each section of fencing to serve its purpose without forcing a single fence style throughout the property.

The Finished Project

The completed project combines the clean lines of ornamental aluminum with the natural character of cedar split-rail fencing.

Around the patio, the 4-foot aluminum fence follows the curved retaining wall and creates a defined, attractive perimeter. On either side of the home, the cedar split-rail sections blend naturally with the property and existing landscape features.

Most importantly, each part of the installation was designed around what was already there rather than forcing the property to accommodate the fence.

👍 We Stand Behind Every Installation

Many companies consider a project finished when the invoice is paid. We don't.

At North Georgia Fence Company, we want the fences and automatic driveway gates we install to continue doing their job long after we leave the property. If one of our customers has a question or discovers an issue related to our installation, we want to hear about it.

Our reputation has been built project by project throughout North Georgia, and standing behind our workmanship is an important part of protecting that reputation.

❓ Why This Project Matters

This project demonstrates why the best fence solution isn't always the simplest one. Curved retaining walls, concrete surfaces, existing structures, and different areas of a property may require different installation techniques and even different fencing materials.

For homeowners with challenging North Georgia properties, good fence design starts by adapting the installation to the property—not the other way around.
