Automatic Driveway Gates Designed for North Georgia Terrain
At North Georgia Fence Company, we’ve brought everything you need to know into one comprehensive resource—from automatic driveway gates for sloped drives or long rural driveways, to solutions for gravel vs. paved approaches, and power access challenges. Explore ideas and equipment options for gate opener systems, along with professional installation and repair services. Whether you’re just starting to research your options or need help fixing an existing gate, this page will guide you through every step.
Sloped Driveways
A common situation in mountainous terrain is a sloped driveway where one side is higher than the other, creating a larger gap between the ground and the bottom of the gate on one side. Sometimes an extension can be fabricated to close the gap, but the best solution is to have the drive leveled, if possible, before gate installation.
Gravel vs Paved
Whether the driveway is gravel, concrete, or asphalt, a wire must be run across the driveway to operate the motor on the side opposite the automation control box. For gravel driveways, we trench a ditch and install conduit to run the wire. For concrete driveways, we widen an existing expansion joint to run the wire, then re-grout the joint with matching concrete. For asphalt driveways, we cut a narrow groove across the driveway, install conduit, then professionally patch it with new asphalt.
Long Rural Driveways
In rural North Georgia, long driveways are common, and power isn’t always available where a driveway gate is needed. Solar-powered equipment is the ideal solution—dependable, affordable, and perfectly suited for these remote locations.
Power Access Challenges
As mentioned above for long rural driveways, electricity isn’t always available or is too expensive to access, making solar a great option. If within 1000 feet of a power source, a underground wire can be run to the gate from the source to power the gate and accessories.

SLIDING GATES
Most of the gate styles shown above can be converted into sliding gates, which is often a great option for residential driveways.
In many cases, we don’t need to change the overall look of your gate—just how it operates. A gate that normally swings open can often be placed on a track with wheels or rollers and guided along a rail. We also add the proper support posts or frame so it opens and closes smoothly and safely.
This means you can keep the style you like while gaining the benefits of a sliding gate, such as better use of space in shorter driveways and easier operation in tight or sloped areas.

When purchasing a driveway gate, it’s important to choose a style and material that complement your property—whether that’s the classic elegance of wrought iron, the rustic warmth of wood, or the sleek, modern look of metal. Be sure the size and design fit your home’s architecture so everything feels cohesive.
Selecting a driveway gate is a personal decision, and our goal is to give you the knowledge to choose with confidence. If you find a gate from one of the sources we recommend, we encourage you to purchase directly from them.
Our role is to professionally install your gate, add automation, and, if needed, meet the delivery truck and move the gate to the job site as part of our installation service.
Before you purchase the driveway gate:
Meet and Confirm:
NGFC would like to meet with you at your job site to confirm your drive gate size and placement before you purchase your gate.
👉 Please call or text to schedule; 706-299-1047
During the onsite survey, NGFC and the homeowner will decide if electricity needs to be run to the gate or if sufficient sunlight is available for solar-powered equipment.
Decisions about access control will also be discussed, i.e., numeric keypads and audio/video communication devices.
Gate Opener Equipment & System Options
Equipment is chosen depending upon:
- power availability - electric or solar
- sliding or swing gate
- size and weight of gate
- access control
For a detailed description and photos of different gate operator models, audio/video intercoms, keypads, emergency access systems, internet gateways with smartphone connectivity, and safety devices, see our article, “Automatic Driveway Gate Opener Equipment Options.”
Power Options (Solar vs Electric)
Most gate openers today run on batteries housed inside the control box. The only real difference between electric and solar models is how those batteries stay charged. Electric systems use a trickle charger powered by 120 VAC grid power, while solar operators keep batteries topped off using free energy from the sun via solar panels.
In a 120 VAC setup, the batteries will typically power the gate for about 200 open/close cycles during a power outage. For a solar system on a typical home—where the gate is used only a few times per day (around 60 cycles per month)—you’d need more than a month of complete cloud cover before the batteries would run down after those same 200 cycles. I’ve never seen this actually happen.
The main downside to solar is when you add power-hungry audio/video intercom systems so homeowners can see and talk to visitors. While these can be configured to work with solar, using regular electricity is the less expensive choice if it’s available.
SOLAR TAX CREDIT - 22% OFF
The federal government is providing financial incentives to homeowners who use solar-powered systems in their homes. Homeowners can apply for a federal tax credit equal to 22% off the installed cost of their LiftMaster® Solar Powered Gate Operator System. Get the details here:
Gate Geometry / sliding or swing gate?
Swing gates are ideal for flat, open areas. Sliding gates can be better for sloped driveways, limited space, or wider openings.
The equipment we use depends on how the gate operates. We prefer LiftMaster gate operators, which offer solutions for all types of gates.
Access Control
We install LiftMaster gate opener systems because they deliver outstanding value and industry‑leading access control options. Most automatic gate opener manufacturers don’t produce every accessory needed for a complete system—such as keypads, obstruction sensors, audio/video intercoms, smartphone integration, and more—so those components must be sourced from multiple vendors.
LiftMaster, however, offers a full line of fully compatible accessories, creating a unified system that’s easier to design, install, and maintain.
Safety Features
Today’s gate operators are Underwriters Laboratories (UL) approved, but this approval requires obstruction sensors. Obstruction sensors are exactly what they sound like: if an obstruction is detected in the gate’s path, the gate will not close. Photo eyes, edge sensors, and in-ground interrupt loops are able to sense obstacles and prevent the gate from closing and damaging or injuring vehicles or people.
