A New Driveway Fence and a Second Use for Locust Rails

North Georgia Fence Company completed this wood fence installation in Blue Ridge, GA to replace an aging stacked rail fence along a steep driveway. The homeowner wanted a crossbuck-style wood fence that would give the drive from the house to the main road a fresh appearance.

The project also offered an opportunity to reuse part of the original fence. Sound locust rails were set aside and reconstructed into approximately 60 feet of stacked rail fencing near the lower rear deck, beside the grade descending into the backyard.

During installation, the homeowner asked about staining the new crossbuck fence. We agreed on that additional work and completed the finish as part of the fencing project.

Customer Problem: An Aging Fence Along a Steep Driveway

The original locust stacked rail fence, sometimes called a “Civil War” or zigzag-style fence, ran along one side of the driveway. Its deteriorating condition led the homeowner to contact NGFC about replacement.

The new fence needed to suit the driveway’s steep setting and the appearance of the property. The homeowner also wanted to make use of salvageable rails behind the house rather than discard all of the old fencing.

Site Inspection: Wood Fence Installation in Blue Ridge, GA

Sam met with the homeowner, listened to the requested changes, and reviewed the proposed fence locations.

Planning covered two different areas: the crossbuck replacement beside the sloping driveway and the stacked rail reconstruction near the lower rear deck. The condition of the old rails also mattered, because only the salvageable material could be reused.

The work brought together a new fence style at the driveway and the rustic character of the original locust rails behind the house.

Solution: Crossbuck Fencing with Selective Material Reuse

The 165-foot driveway replacement used a four-board crossbuck-style layout. Dent’s review identifies the material as 1-by-6-inch rough-sawn pressure-treated wood.

The crossing-board pattern created a different appearance from the old stacked rails while maintaining an open fence style along the drive.

At the rear of the property, approximately 60 feet of salvaged locust rails were reconstructed as stacked rail fencing near the lower deck. This gave usable material a second purpose as a landscape barrier along the backyard grade.

The requested stain finish was added to the driveway-fence scope during the project.

Installation Process

Removing the Old Driveway Fence

NGFC removed the deteriorating stacked rail fencing from the driveway location. Salvageable locust rails were separated for reuse behind the house.

Building the Crossbuck Fence

We installed the replacement wood fence in the agreed crossbuck style along the steep drive. The work focused on the requested fence pattern and its presentation along the route between the house and main road.

Reconstructing the Locust Rail Fence

Sound rails from the old fence were used to reconstruct approximately 60 feet of stacked rail fencing at the rear of the home, near the lower deck and descending backyard.

Staining the New Fence

After installation began, the homeowner asked NGFC to quote staining the new fence. We agreed on the additional scope and completed the staining as part of the project.

Final Result: A Finished Driveway Fence and Reused Rustic Materials

The stained crossbuck fence gives the steep driveway a more coordinated appearance. The completed-fence photo shows the new board pattern following the driveway through the property.

Behind the house, the reconstructed locust rail fence preserves some of the original fence’s rustic character. Instead of treating the entire old fence as waste, the project reused sound material in a location selected with the homeowner.

The customer’s five-star review recognized the workmanship, communication, and value of the finished job.

Customer Review

“The original split rail decorative fence alongide our driveway in Blue Ridge was falling apart, so we looked into a local fence contractor and found Sam McCombs with North Georgia Fence Company. He came out, met with us, listened to what we wanted and gave us an estimate - we signed and Sam got the job scheduled. The end result is 165' of 4-board "crossbuck-style" fencing made from 1x6" rough-sawn pressure treated wood. After installation began, we went another step and had Sam stain the entire fence line. Great job by North Georgia Fence Co. at a fair market cost - you pay for what you get and Sam and NGF are worth every penny.”
