BFT Solar Gate Opener Upgraded to LiftMaster LA400 – Ball Ground, GA
North Georgia Fence Company recently completed a solar gate opener replacement in Ball Ground, GA, at a horse farm where we had originally installed the automatic driveway gate equipment approximately ten years earlier.
In 2016, we equipped the property's single-swing driveway gate with a BFT Ecosol solar system and Kustos gate operator. The system provided reliable service for years, and when problems eventually began to develop, North Georgia Fence Company returned to the Ball Ground property to service the equipment and keep it operational.
Eventually, however, the Kustos actuator motor failed. Rather than continue investing in an aging gate operator, the homeowner decided it was time for a complete system upgrade.
We replaced the BFT equipment with a LiftMaster LA400 PKGUL solar gate operator system, a 35-watt solar panel, LiftMaster universal solar harness, KPW5 wireless keypad and LMRRUL retro-reflective photo eye.
Because the property's existing Diablo XLP-8 vehicle exit loop was still working properly, we incorporated it into the new LiftMaster system rather than replacing good equipment unnecessarily.
Nearly Ten Years of Solar Gate Operation in Ball Ground
North Georgia Fence Company originally automated this Ball Ground horse farm driveway gate in 2016 using a BFT Ecosol solar system with a Kustos single-gate operator.
Solar power was an appropriate solution for this property, allowing the automatic driveway gate to operate without requiring conventional electrical service at the entrance.
Customer Problem: An Aging Solar Gate Opener in Ball Ground
Approximately three months before the eventual replacement, the homeowner contacted us for another service call because of concerns with the gate's operation.
We dispatched a technician and performed a complete diagnosis.
Interestingly, we could not find a failure.
The solar panel was producing sufficient power, the batteries were fully charged, and the automatic gate operated properly while we were on site.
Rather than replace components without evidence that they had failed, we left the functioning system in service.
Several months later, the homeowner called us again.
This time, the problem revealed itself.
Site Inspection: The BFT Kustos Actuator Motor Had Failed
During the latest service visit, our diagnosis was much different.
The BFT Kustos actuator motor had burned out and would no longer operate the driveway gate.
At this point, the question was no longer simply whether we could make another repair. The larger question was whether continuing to invest in a roughly ten-year-old gate operator made financial sense.
The system had already provided many years of service and had received previous repairs. After discussing the options with the homeowner, we mutually agreed that the better long-term decision was to replace the aging BFT system rather than continue putting money into it.
Solution: Upgrade to a LiftMaster LA400 Solar Gate Operator
We recommended replacing the old equipment with a LiftMaster LA400 solar-powered single-gate operator system.
The new installation included:
- LiftMaster LA400 PKGUL gate operator system
- 35-watt solar panel
- LiftMaster K94-37236 universal solar harness kit
- LiftMaster KPW5 wireless keypad
- LiftMaster LMRRUL retro-reflective photo eye
This provided a fresh operator, solar-power equipment, access-control keypad and modern monitored safety equipment while allowing the homeowner to continue using solar power at the remote driveway entrance.
Installation Process
We removed the aging BFT Ecosol/Kustos gate automation equipment while preserving the existing driveway gate and usable infrastructure.
The new LiftMaster LA400 equipment was installed and configured for single-gate operation.
A 35-watt solar panel supplies the new system, with the LiftMaster universal solar harness incorporated into the installation.
We also installed the KPW5 wireless keypad for convenient property access and the LMRRUL retro-reflective photo eye as part of the gate's monitored entrapment-protection system.
Not every component of the original installation needed replacement.
The property's existing Diablo XLP-8 Mini Loop Kit with approximately 100 feet of lead-in cable was still functioning properly. Instead of replacing a working vehicle-detection system simply because we were changing gate operators, we incorporated the existing Diablo exit loop into the new LiftMaster installation.
That allowed the homeowner to retain a useful part of the previous system while replacing the equipment that had reached the end of its practical service life.
Final Result
This Ball Ground, GA horse farm now has a new LiftMaster LA400 solar gate operator system replacing the aging BFT Ecosol/Kustos equipment North Georgia Fence Company originally installed in 2016.
The upgraded entrance combines LiftMaster gate automation with a 35-watt solar power system, wireless keypad access, monitored photo-eye protection and the property's existing Diablo vehicle exit loop.
Most importantly, the homeowner now has a modern replacement system rather than continuing to invest in repairs to an operator that had already provided approximately a decade of service.
Why This Project Matters
An older automatic gate does not necessarily need to be replaced the first time it develops a problem. Proper diagnosis and service can often extend the useful life of the equipment for years—but eventually there is a point where replacement becomes a better investment than repeated repairs.
This Ball Ground project demonstrates both sides of that decision: we maintained the original BFT system while repairs remained reasonable and recommended replacement only after the aging actuator failed and continued investment no longer made sense.
Our Commitment Doesn't End at Installation
North Georgia Fence Company originally installed this Ball Ground automatic driveway gate system in 2016. When the gate eventually needed service, the homeowner knew who to call.
We returned more than once over the years, diagnosed problems, performed repairs and kept the BFT system operating as long as practical. Even during the service call three months before replacement, when we could not reproduce a problem and every component tested properly, we did not recommend replacing parts simply for the sake of making a repair.
When the Kustos actuator finally failed, we returned again, explained the options and helped the homeowner decide when it was time to stop repairing the old equipment and move to a new LiftMaster system.
Installing an automatic gate is the beginning of the relationship—not the end of it.
